2007 Qatari Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held in Qatar on 1 April 2007 for the third time. Three women and 122 men ran for 29 seats in the Central Municipal Council. About 28,000 citizens of the 174,000 Qataris were able to vote, International Herald Tribune, 31 March 2007 and overall turnout was 51.1 per cent. Qatar
Qatar, officially the State of Qatar, is a country in West Asia. It occupies the Geography of Qatar, Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East; it shares Qatar–Saudi Arabia border, its sole land border with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. The Gulf of Bahrain, an inlet of the Persian Gulf, separates Qatar from nearby Bahrain. The capital is Doha, home to over 80% of the country's inhabitants. Most of the land area is made up of flat, low-lying desert. Central Municipal Council
The first municipal council in Qatar was formed in the early 1950s and it was reorganized in 1956. Doha Municipality, Doha municipality came into being in May 1963. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs was established in 1972 as a government body responsible for supervising the functions of municipalities. Decree No 4 for 1963 organized, for the first time, the election and appointment of the members of the municipal council. Law No 11 for 1963 followed. It stipulated that the municipal council is formed by a decree and that the appointment of the members is based on the nomination of the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture. The first joint meeting of municipal councils in the country was held in 1983. Most of the credit goes to this meeting in deciding to form a central municipal council to replace the numerous municipal councils. Sheikha Yousuf Hasan Al Jufairi
Sheikha bint Yousuf Al-Jufairi (Arabic: شيخة بنت يوسف الجفيري) is a Qatari politician. Since 2003, she has served on the Central Municipal Council (CMC) in Qatar from the Airport constituency. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Arab University of Beirut. She is the Head of the Legal Committee of the Council. Madinat Ash Shamal
Madinat ash Shamal () is the capital city of the municipality of Al Shamal in Qatar. Located more than north of Qatar's capital Doha, the city was founded in the 1970s, shortly after the country gained independence. It was delimited in 1988 and shares its boundaries with Ar-Ruʼays to the east and Abu Dhalouf to the west. Madinat ash Shamal's creation came in an attempt to consolidate northern Qatar's industries and services into one main area. As a result, the city has several government offices in the Al Shamal Government Center and hosts the industrial hub of the municipality – Al Shamal Industrial Area. Elections In Qatar
The political system of Qatar runs under an authoritarian semi-constitutional monarchy with the emir as head of state and chief executive, and the prime minister as the head of government. Under the Constitution of Qatar, the partially-elected Consultative Assembly has a limited ability to reject legislation and dismiss ministers. The second general election was held in 2021; political parties are banned and all candidates have to run as independents.
