2007 Churchill Cup
The 2007 Churchill Cup was held from May 18 to June 2, 2007. It was the fifth year of the Churchill Cup. Six rugby union teams took part: Canada, England Saxons, Ireland A, New Zealand Māori, Scotland A, and the USA. Format The teams were split into two pools of three teams each. The winners of the two pools moved on to compete in the overall final, while the two runners-up competed for the Plate, and the two bottom-placed teams contested the Bowl. All of the finals were played on 2 June 2007 at Twickenham. 2007 was the first occasion where the competition was played outside of North America. This was because many players were to be in Europe ahead of the Rugby World Cup. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, military officer, and writer who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 ( during the Second World War) and again from 1951 to 1955. For some 62 of the years between 1900 and 1964, he was a member of parliament (MP) and represented a total of five constituencies over that time. Ideologically an adherent to economic liberalism and imperialism, he was for most of his career a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955. He was a member of the Liberal Party from 1904 to 1924. Of mixed English and American parentage, Churchill was born in Oxfordshire into the wealthy, aristocratic Spencer family. Jim Evans (rugby Union)
Jim Evans (born 2 August 1980, in Orsett) is a former English rugby union player who played in the position of lock for Harlequins in the Guinness Premiership. Evans joined Harlequins in 1999, making his League debut against the Northampton Saints on 19 April 2000. Evans represented England at the 2001 Under 21 Rugby World Championship in Australia. In 2004 he was a member of the Quins European Challenge Cup winning side, as they defeated Montferrand 27–26. Olly Barkley
Oliver John Barkley (born 28 November 1981) is a former English rugby union player who played for Bath, Gloucester, Racing Metro, Grenoble, Scarlets and London Welsh at fly-half between 2001 and 2016. Early career Barkley was born in Hammersmith, London but raised in Wadebridge, Cornwall. He was educated at Wadebridge School, and later at Colston's Collegiate School, Bristol where, under the guidance of Peter Mallorie and Alan Martinovic, he captained the team to a Daily Mail Cup success in 2000. Nick Abendanon
Nick Abendanon (born 27 August 1986 in Bryanston, South Africa) is a former England international rugby union player. His preferred position was full-back. He has Dutch nationality through his parents. Abendanon started playing during the 2006–07 season, scoring 10 tries in 24 first-team appearances for Bath. A strong tackler, balanced runner and dangerous counter-attacker, he firmly established himself as Bath's first-choice full-back in the post- Matt Perry era. His form that season earned him a first England cap in South Africa – the country of his birth – in June 2007. He was capped again against France in August 2007, but narrowly missed out on a place in England's 30-man squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. David Paice
David James Paice (born 24 November 1983) is a former rugby union player. A Rugby union positions#Hooker, hooker, he was a one-club man for London Irish and represented England national rugby union team, England eight times. Career Paice was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin and raised in Brisbane. In 2003 during a gap year, he joined the academy of London Irish and made his club debut that same year. Paice was a member of the side that were defeated by Gloucester Rugby, Gloucester in extra time of the 2005–06 European Challenge Cup, 2006 European Challenge Cup final. Henley Hawks
Henley Hawks is a rugby union club based in Henley-on-Thames and is one of the leading rugby clubs in the Thames Valley. The first team play in the fourth tier of the English league system; National League 2 East. History Henley RFC was founded in August 1930 as Old Henleiensians (old boys of Henley Grammar School). Gordon Ross (rugby Union)
Gordon Ross (born 8 March 1978) is a Scottish rugby union footballer who played as a fly-half. He earned 25 caps for Scotland. Ross represented Edinburgh and Scottish Schools at U16 and U18 level before going on to represent Scotland at U19 and at U21 levels. He attended George Heriot's School and started his senior career with Heriots before joining Edinburgh when Scotland opted for regional rugby in 2000. The highlight of his early career was kicking the winning goal for Edinburgh Rugby against Biarritz Olympique in 1997 and beating England as part of the Scotland U19 squad in the same season. Rory Lamont
Rory Lamont (born 10 October 1982 in Perth) is a former rugby union player who played as full-back and on the wing for Glasgow Warriors and Scotland. He prides himself on his versatility. Rory is the younger brother of Sean Lamont. Rugby career Club career Lamont played for Northampton Saints, and also for Northampton Old Scouts RFC after leaving Northampton Saints. In February 2009 it was announced that he was to join RC Toulon in France's Top 14. On 27 November he terminated his contract himself as he felt he was not getting enough playing time, risking him losing his place in the Scottish side. George Clancy (rugby Union)
George Clancy is an Irish rugby union referee. Clancy refereed at the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. He has also refereed in the Pro14, the European Rugby Champions Cup, the Six Nations Championship and the Rugby Championship. Clancy refereed the 2007 Churchill Cup final and the 2009 and 2011 European Challenge Cup finals. Between 2013 and 2017 Clancy also served as a touch judge/assistant referee at five consecutive European Rugby Champions Cup finals. Early life George Clancy is the son of Seoirse and Helen Clancy. Stockport is a town in Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester, south-west of Ashton-under-Lyne and north of Macclesfield. Edgeley Park
Edgeley Park is a association football, football stadium in Edgeley, Stockport, England. Built for Stockport RFC, a rugby league club, in 1891, by 1903 the rugby club was defunct and Stockport County F.C., Stockport County Football Club moved in. Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club also played at the ground between 2003 and 2012. Edgeley Park is currently an all-seater stadium holding 10,900 spectators but is set to be increased to a capacity of around 18,000, with the start of the project in 2025. In 2015, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, Stockport Council purchased the stadium for around £2 million, leasing it back to the football club, in order to prevent it from being demolished and redeveloped.
