Serena Williams defeated Kim Clijsters in the final, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2001 Indian Wells Open. This would be the final time Williams would attend the Indian Wells Open until 2015, due to a boycott of the tournament by both Williams sisters in protest of alleged racist remarks by crowd members. Venus Williams would not return to the tournament until 2016. Lindsay Davenport was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Serena Williams. Anke Huber
Anke Huber (born 4 December 1974) is a German retired professional tennis player. She was the runner-up in women's singles at the 1996 Australian Open and the 1995 WTA Finals. Huber won 12 singles and one doubles title on the WTA Tour. She finished inside the top 20 for 10 seasons and achieved a career-high ranking of four in October 1996. Anne Kremer (born 17 October 1975) is a Luxembourgish retired tennis player. She won two singles titles on the WTA Tour. On 29 July 2002, she achieved her best WTA ranking of world No. 18. Kremer completed her schooling at the Athénée de Luxembourg and subsequently studied English and history at Stanford University in California. Barbara Schett Eagle (; born 10 March 1976) is an Austrian former professional tennis player, who reached her highest singles ranking of world No. 7 in September 1999.
