American League East
The American League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. MLB consists of an East, Central, and West division for each of its two 15-team leagues, the American League (AL) and National League (NL). This division was created before the start of the season along with the American League West division. Before that time, each league consisted of 10 teams without any divisions. Four of the division's five teams are located in the Eastern United States, with the other team, the Toronto Blue Jays, in Eastern Canada. Juan Pedro Villamán
Juan Pedro (J.P.) Villamán (April 5, 1959 – May 30, 2005) was a Dominican- American sportscaster who served as the Spanish language play-by-play announcer for the Boston Red Sox. The youngest of nine children, Villamán fell in love with broadcasting at an early age. Aged 13, he called baseball and basketball games from a local radio station in San Francisco de Macorís, where he was born and raised by his aunt, Orfelina Villamán, after his mother died giving birth to him. Like many Dominicans, Villamán played baseball and showed promise as a catcher. His best sport, though, was basketball; he played on the national teams in Panama and Puerto Rico. The Cy Young Award is given annually to the best pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB), one each for the American League (AL) and National League (NL). This division was formed in the realignment of 1994 by moving three teams from the American League West and two teams from the American League East. In Major League Baseball (MLB), the wild card teams are the three teams in each of the two leagues (American and National) that have qualified for the postseason despite failing to win their division. Those teams in each league possess the three best winning percentages in their league after the three division winners. The wild card was first instituted in MLB in 1994, with one wild card team per league advancing to the Division Series in the postseason to face a division winner. In 2012, the system was modified to add a second wild card team per league and pit each league's wild card teams against each other in a play-in game – the MLB Wild Card Game – the winner of which would then advance to the Division Series and play the team with the best record.
