The king of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is Jordan's head of state and monarch. He serves as the head of the Jordanian monarchy—the Hashemite dynasty. The king is addressed as His Majesty (). Jordan is a constitutional monarchy. However, the king is vested with somewhat more executive and legislative power than is typically the case for constitutional monarchs. He is commander-in-chief of the Jordanian Armed Forces and appoints the Prime Minister of Jordan and the directors of security agencies. He also appoints the members of the upper house, the Senate, as well as the members of the Constitutional Court. Hussein bin Talal ( ar, الحسين بن طلال, ''Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalāl''; 14 November 1935 – 7 February 1999) was King of Jordan from 11 August 1952 until his death in 1999. As a member of the Hashemite dynasty, the royal family of Jordan since 1921, Hussein was a 40th-generation direct descendant of Muhammad. Hussein was born in Amman as the eldest child of Talal bin Abdullah and Zein al-Sharaf bint Jamil. Talal was then the heir to his own father, King Abdullah I. Hussein began his schooling in Amman, continuing his education abroad. After Talal became king in 1951, Hussein was named heir apparent. The Jordanian Parliament forced Talal to abdicate a year later due to his illness, and a regency council was appointed until Hussein came of age. He was enthroned at the age of 17 on 2 May 1953. Abdelsalam Al-Majali
Abdelsalam al-Majali ( ; ar, عبد السلام المجالي; born 18 February 1926) is a Jordanian physician and politician who served twice as the 29th Prime Minister of Jordan. Early life and education Majali was born in Al Karak, Emirate of Transjordan (now Jordan) in 1926. He received his medical degree from Syrian University in Damascus in 1949. He also holds a diploma of Laryngology and Otology from the Royal College of Physicians in London, which he obtained in 1953. He was awarded a fellowship by the American College of Surgeons in 1960. In 1974, he received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from Hacettepe University. Career Majali was director of medical services for the Jordanian Armed Forces from 1960 to 1969. He also served as minister of health (1969–1971), minister of state for prime ministerial affairs (1970–1971 and 1976–1979) and also, minister of education (1976–1979).
