1988 CFL Season
The 1988 CFL season is considered to be the 35th season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 31st Canadian Football League season. CFL News in 1988 The Canadian Football Network reached an agreement with the CFL to extend its network for two more seasons. Game rosters were revised to consist of 20-Non Imports, 14-Imports and 2-Quarterbacks. The reserve list was lowered from 4 players to 2 players. In addition, if a team decided to dress 14-Imports, one of those imports had to be designated as a special teams player. On Monday, December 12, the CFL Board of Governors appointed Roy McMurty as Chairman/Chief Executive Officer and Bill Baker as President/Chief Operating Officer, succeeding Douglas Mitchell as the league's commissioner (both McMurtry and Baker served as the league's ''de facto'' co-commissioners for the 1989 season). Winnipeg Blue Bombers
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are a professional Canadian football team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Blue Bombers compete in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member club of the league's West division. They play their home games at IG Field. The Blue Bombers were founded in 1930 as the Winnipeg Rugby Football Club, later changed to the Winnipeg Football Club, which is the organization's legal name. The Blue Bombers are one of three community owned teams, without shareholders, in the CFL. Edmonton Eskimos
The Edmonton Elks are a professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta. The club competes in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member of the league's West Division and plays their home games at the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium. Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian
The Dick Suderman Trophy (french: Trophée Dick Suderman) for the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian (''Le Canadien le plus précieux de la Coupe Grey'') is awarded annually to the Canadian player deemed to have the best performance in the Grey Cup game, the championship of the Canadian Football League. This award is presented before the Grey Cup trophy is presented. The winner does not necessarily have to play for the Grey Cup winning team in order to qualify. The award was introduced at the 1971 Grey Cup, and the first winner was Dick Suderman, a Canadian defensive end. A year later, just six weeks before the playing of the 1972 Grey Cup, Suderman collapsed and died from a brain hemorrhage after playing a regular season game; the trophy was subsequently renamed in his honour. Bob Cameron (Canadian Football)
Robert "Bob" Cameron (born July 18, 1954) is a former Canadian football player who played 23 seasons (1980-2002) with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Cameron was a quarterback at Acadia University. He won the Hec Crighton Trophy (most outstanding college football player in Canada). Cameron was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the first round of the 1977 College Draft. He was converted to a punter with the Blue Bombers. Bob Cameron remains the CFL's all-time leading punter with 134,301 regular season punting yards. He was a CFL all-star 4 times, a divisional all-star 6 times, and helped the Bombers to three Grey Cup victories. In the 1988 Grey Cup Cameron was named the game's Most Valuable Canadian for his effective punting in windy conditions. Mike Gray (Canadian Football)
Mike Gray (born February 11, 1960) is a former award-winning and all-star Canadian Football League defensive tackle and Grey Cup champion. After playing his college football at the University of Oregon Gray started his pro career with the British Columbia Lions in 1985. He played 16 games and had 13 sacks, good for an all-star nod and the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award. After 8 sacks in 1986, the Lions lost Gray to the Ottawa Rough Riders in the equalization draft. Ottawa released him and he began a 7-year stay with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, playing 107 regular season games and being named an Eastern all-star in 1989. Perhaps Gray's most famous and dramatic play came in the classic 76th Grey Cup game. Facing his old team, the B.C. Grey Cup's Most Valuable Player
The Grey Cup's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is awarded annually since 1959 to the player of the winning team who deemed to have had the best performance in the Grey Cup Game, the Canadian Football League's championship game. James Murphy (gridiron Football)
James Jessie Murphy (born October 10, 1959) was a receiver for eight seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Career Murphy played for the Bombers from 1982-1990. He was named the league's Most Outstanding Player in 1986 and was a two-time All-Star. He helped the Bombers to three Grey Cup victories and finished his career with 9,036 receiving yards, which was the Blue Bombers record until it was broken by Milt Stegall. He was elected into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and was selected as one of the Blue Bombers 20 All-Time Greats in 2005. Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are a professional Canadian football team based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. They are currently members of the East Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
