1987 WAFL Season
The 1987 WAFL season was the 103rd season of the West Australian Football League in its various incarnations. This season saw a Western Australia-based team, , was one of two interstate teams (along with the Gold Coast-based Brisbane Bears) to make their debut in the Victorian Football League (VFL), which had profound effects on the WAFL competition. The Eagles took away thirty-five of the competition's best players, severely reducing attendances and club revenue, the latter of which was further affected by the payment of the Eagles’ licence fee to the VFL. The WAFL budgeted for a 30 percent decline in attendances, but the observed decline was over fifty percent, and they were also hit by Channel Seven telecasting the Round 17 versus match, breaching agreements to ''not'' telecast non-Eagles VFL matches to Perth. Todd Breman
Todd George Breman (born 28 October 1965 in Subiaco, Western Australia) is a former cricketer and Australian rules footballer. Cricket career Breman debuted for Western Australia during the 1985–1986 season as a medium pace bowler. He played 10 first-class matches and five List A matches over three seasons. He had played cricket in the summer and football in the winter with the Subiaco Football Club, before pursuing a full-time career in Australian rules football in the Victorian Football League (now AFL). Football career After playing with the Subiaco Football Club in the WAFL and leading their goalscoring in 1987 and 1988, Breman was drafted in the 1988 VFL Draft to the West Coast Eagles. Robert Wiley
Robert John Wiley (born 24 March 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and for the Richmond Football Club and West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). An inaugural member of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame, Wiley is regarded as one of the finest rovers of his era. He later coached Perth and , and was an assistant coach at West Coast. Career Born in Kalgoorlie, and educated at Scotch College, Wiley was zoned to in the WANFL, making his debut for them in 1974 at the age of 19. Mick Rea
Michael Desmond Rea (born 10 December 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Recruited from Edithvale-Aspendale, Rea made three appearances with Melbourne late in the 1978 VFL season, all of which they lost. He wasn't kept on Melbourne's list the following year and joined Perth, with whom he would be a prolific forward until 1988, except for a brief stint with Mines Rovers in Collie during the 1984 season. Mal Brown
Malcolm Gregory "Mal" Brown (born 26 October 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League and West Australian National Football League. He is described as "one of the most colourful and controversial characters" of the game. He was a highly controversial character not only for his many visits to the tribunal during his playing career but also for a number of incidents when coaching as well. Career Brown played in the WAFL (West Australian Football League ) for East Perth, Claremont and South Fremantle. Clinton Browning
Clinton Browning (born 7 March 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Browning was a versatile key position player from Mingenew and started out at East Fremantle as a full-forward. A Lynn Medalist in 1984, he was easily the most prominent forward in the 1985 WAFL Grand Final, with six goals, to help East Fremantle defeat Subiaco. The following year, Browning was recruited to Hawthorn but could not break into the team and returned home. Brian Peake
Brian Francis Peake OAM (born 4 December 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played State of Origin football for Western Australia from 1978 to 1987, captaining the side in 1979, 1980, 1986 and 1987. Peake was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1990 and was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Graham Thomas Melrose (born 20 April 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as for the East Fremantle Football Club and the Swan Districts Football Club in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL). Regarded as a competitive and skilful rover with particularly accurate foot passing, Melrose was unlucky to miss out on North Melbourne's premierships due to injury, but experienced success with both East Fremantle and Swan Districts. Warren Ralph
Warren James Ralph (born 25 February 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played during the 1980s with great success as a full-forward for Claremont in the WAFL and with lesser success in the VFL and SANFL. Ralph began his career at Floreat Park in the WA Amateur Football League. He then played two seasons in the country with Dalwallinu before returning to Floreat, where he also had a considerable reputation in the local cricket competition as a fast bowler before dedicating himself solely to football in 1979. He debuted for Claremont's league team in 1980 and showed himself to be an extremely potent full-forward in dry conditions: against Perth and Subiaco he kicked totals of 11.6 (72). His performance for the Tigers in wet conditions, against South Fremantle and East Fremantle, suggested that Ralph had limitations.
