Events *March – Vincent Finn is appointed Director-General of RTÉ. *25 July – RTÉ 2 picks up the last British sitcom to star Leonard Rossiter, ''Tripper's Day''. *16 November – US action adventure series ''MacGyver'' premieres on RTÉ 1, two months after its first television airing in its homeland. *24 December – ''The Riordans'' is broadcast for the final time on RTÉ radio. The programme had switched from television to radio in 1979. *Undated – '' The Late Late Show'' attracts controversy following an interview with a pair of lesbian former nuns. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Frank Twomey (presenter)
Frank Twomey (1954 or 1955 – 11 December 2023) was an Irish children's show host, best known as the main host of the children's television programme ''Bosco''. Career Other than the one in Bosco, his lesser-known credits include other screen appearances and appearances on stage. Twomey went on to appear on ''Bull Island'', particularly as Mary O'Rourke, the then Minister for Public Enterprise. Twomey later featured on the advice show ''Agony OAPs'', with retired footballer Pat Spillane and retired politician Mary O'Rourke, whom he impersonated on ''Bull Island''. Saturday Supercade
''Saturday Supercade'' is an American animated television series produced for Saturday mornings by Ruby-Spears Productions. It ran for two seasons on CBS. Premise Each episode is composed of several shorter segments featuring video game characters from the golden age of arcade video games. The segments included: * Frogger (from the ''Frogger'' arcade game) * Donkey Kong with Mario and Pauline (from the ''Donkey Kong'' arcade game) * Donkey Kong Jr. (from the '' Donkey Kong Jr.'' arcade game) * Q*bert with Coily, Ugg, Wrongway, Slick and Sam (from the ''Q*bert'' arcade game) * Pitfall Harry with his pet mountain lion Quickclaw and his niece Rhonda (unlike the others which are arcade games, this segment is from the home console game ''Pitfall!''). Monchhichis (TV Series)
''Monchhichis'' is an American animated series based on the stuffed toy line of dolls, released by the Japanese company Sekiguchi Corporation. Produced by Hanna-Barbera, it premiered on ABC on September 10, 1983 as part of '' The Monchhichis/Little Rascals/Richie Rich Show'', replacing ''Pac-Man'' (which had by then been given its own half-hour time slot) from the previous season. ''Super Gran'' is a fictional series about a grandmother with super powers. Initially a series of books written by Forrest Wilson, a children's television show was adapted by Jenny McDade and produced by Tyne Tees Television for Children's ITV. The title character was played by Gudrun Ure, with Iain Cuthbertson as her nemesis, The Scunner Campbell. It originally ran from 1985 to 1987. Two series, each consisting of thirteen episodes, were produced, alongside a Christmas special. All episodes have been released on DVD by Network. The show inspired two computer games. ''The Wind in the Willows'' is a British stop motion animated television series that was originally broadcast between 1984 and 1987, based on characters from Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel ''The Wind in the Willows'' and following the 1983 feature-length pilot film. The series continues from where the film left off, and original voice cast members David Jason, Richard Pearson and Michael Hordern return. However, Ian Carmichael, who had previously voiced Rat in the film, has now been cast as the narrator, and Rat is now played by Peter Sallis. The series was made by Manchester-based animation company Cosgrove Hall for Thames Television and shown on the ITV network. An hour-long feature, '' A Tale of Two Toads'', was broadcast in 1989. Children's Island (TV Series)
Children's Island, formerly known as "Cat Island" is an island off Marblehead, Massachusetts, and is part of the City of Salem, Massachusetts. The YMCA of the North Shore has owned and operated a children's day camp on it since 1955. The first written record of the island was in 1655 when it was granted to Governor John Endecott. It was then bought and sold several times until around the Revolutionary War when the Essex hospital was built as a smallpox inoculation site. The hospital was burned down by townspeople of Marblehead. By the end of the 19th century, the Lowell island house was established as a summer resort. This was run for about 30 years before being converted into a sanitarium for sick and crippled children until 1946. The island then lay unused until bought by the YMCA and converted into a day camp. ''Alvin and the Chipmunks'' is an American animated television series featuring the Chipmunks, which was produced by Bagdasarian Productions in association with Ruby-Spears Enterprises from 1983 to 1987, Murakami-Wolf-Swenson in 1988 and DIC Enterprises from 1988 to 1990. Much of the overseas animation was done by Hanho Heung-Up for Seasons 2-5. The Murakami-Wolf-Swenson episodes were animated by A-1 Productions. The last Season was animated by Sei Young Animation. Ever Decreasing Circles
''Ever Decreasing Circles'' is a British sitcom which ran on BBC1 between 1984 and 1989, consisting of four series and one feature-length special. It was written by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey, and it reunited them with Richard Briers, who had starred in their previous hit show, '' The Good Life''. It was made toward the end of a run of British comedies focussing on the aspirational middle class, with ''the Guardian'' describing it as having "a quiet, unacknowledged and deep-running despair to it that in retrospect seems quite daring". Characters and plot Richard Briers plays Martin Bryce, an obsessive, middle-aged man at the centre of his local suburban community in Mole Valley, East Surrey. This relatively unsympathetic character was the antithesis of Tom Good. Briers said that it was his favourite sitcom role.
