1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship
The 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament was the 22nd organized men's college soccer tournament by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, to determine the top college soccer team in the United States. The San Francisco Dons won their fourth national title (their 1978 title and tournament wins were vacated by the NCAA) by defeating the Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game, 4–3, after one overtime period. Oddly, this was re-match of the 1978 tournament final won by San Francisco but later vacated by the NCAA. The final match was played on December 14, 1980, in Tampa, Florida, at Tampa Stadium for the third straight year. The San Francisco Dons is the nickname of the athletic teams at the University of San Francisco (USF). The Dons compete in NCAA Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as members of the West Coast Conference (WCC), of which USF is a charter member. History Athletics at USF dates back to its founding in 1855, when founder Anthony Maraschi, S.J. organized ball games as recreation for the first students. However, intercollegiate competition only dates back to 1907, when then-Saint Ignatius College began playing organized baseball, basketball, and rugby against other local colleges and high schools. Appalachian State Mountaineers
The Appalachian State Mountaineers are the athletic teams that represent Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, United States. The Mountaineers compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and were a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) between 1972 and 2014. The 1980 NCAA Division II Soccer Championship was the ninth annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. Lock Haven State defeated Florida International in the final, 1–0 (after one overtime period), to win their first Division II national title (the Bald Eagles won the Division III tournament in both 1977 and 1978). The UCLA Bruins men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of California at Los Angeles. The team is a member of the Pac-12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Penn State Nittany Lions men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of Pennsylvania State University. The team is a member of the Big Ten Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Connecticut Huskies Men's Soccer
The UConn Huskies men's soccer team is an intercollegiate varsity sports team of the University of Connecticut. The team is a member of the Big East Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). History Connecticut soccer existed prior to 1969, but was not considered a major sport and did not even have a real stadium. However, in 1969, Joe Morrone was hired as head coach, and made significant changes that would make the Huskies a premiere program. He started by building Connecticut Soccer Stadium, which now bears his name as Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Eventually, in Morrone's words, the team became "the Notre Dame of college soccer". Morrone would ultimately coach the team until he retired in 1994.
