1956 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic. James Edward Rutledge
James Edward Rutledge (August 14, 1889 – August 15, 1966) was a lawyer and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Halifax County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1939 to 1956 as a Liberal member. He was born in Sheet Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, the son of Alexander Cameron Rutledge and Ada Stewart Hartling. He was educated at Dalhousie University. He served as a lieutenant in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. In 1917, Rutledge married Minnie Etoile Silver. Guysborough-Tracadie
Guysborough-Tracadie is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It was created in 1867 as Guysborough. It included all of Guysborough County and elected two members to the House of Assembly. In 1933, the number of members elected was reduced to one. In 1993, the name was changed to Guysborough–Port Hawkesbury as the town of Port Hawkesbury was added to the district. In 2003 it was renamed Guysborough–Sheet Harbour as it gained an eastern area from Eastern Shore and lost Port Hawkesbury to Inverness. In 2013, following the recommendations of the 2012 Electoral Boundaries Commission, the district was renamed Guysborough–Eastern Shore–Tracadie and gained the area east of the Tracadie River from Antigonish. Inverness is a provincial electoral district on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Initially created with the name "Juste-au-Corps", the electoral district of Inverness has existed in various forms since 1836. The name was changed to Inverness after lobbying by William Young. It existed continuously as Inverness County until 1981 when it was divided into Inverness North and Inverness South. It was re-formed in 1993.
