1953 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1953 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1952–53 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the sixth such tournament in NCAA history. It was held from March 12 to 14, 1953, and concluded with Michigan defeating Minnesota 7-3. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Michigan's win capped off its third consecutive National Championship. As of 2018 no team has been able to match that achievement. Additionally, their 14 goals in the semifinal game against Boston University were the most ever for an NCAA tournament game, matched only by Minnesota in 1954. The Wolverines' goal differential (+16) is also a record for an NCAA tournament, equaling the record set by Colorado College in 1950 and matched by Wisconsin in 1983. Broadmoor World Arena
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is a college athletic conference which operates in the Midwestern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a women's ice hockey-only conference. From 1951 to 1999, it operated as a men-only league, adding women's competition in the 1999–2000 season. It operated men's and women's leagues through the 2020–21 season; during this period, the men's WCHA expanded to include teams far removed from its traditional Midwestern base, with members in Alabama, Alaska, and Colorado at different times. The men's side of the league officially disbanded after seven members left to form the revived Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA); the WCHA remains in operation as a women-only league. George Chin
George Chin is a Canadian retired ice hockey right wing who won consecutive National Championships with Michigan. Career Charles and Rose Chin, operators of Chin's Restaurant in Lucknow, Ontario, had fourteen children together. All eleven of their sons grew up playing hockey but three of the boys demonstrated a tremendous amount of talent. In September 1944 Albert (17), Bill (16) and George (15) all attended the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp and put on a show for the spectators. Despite being smaller and younger than most of the other players, the three boys had reports from the Toronto Daily Star claiming: "They'll be ready for the big time before long." Jim Mattson
James Mattson is an American ice hockey goaltender who backstopped Minnesota to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances. Career Mattson grew up playing junior hockey in the Minnesota area, but for his senior year of high school he headed to Nova Scotia. He only appeared in 7 games for the Halifax St. Mary's because he joined the University of Minnesota for the spring semester in 1952. Mattson played 8 games for the gophers, providing much needed stability in goal as Minnesota finished the season winning 7 of their final 8 games. The following year Mattson started for the Gophers and he produced phenomenal results; he tied the NCAA record with 22 wins and finished second in the nation with a 2.36 goals against average setting single-season program records in wins, g.a.a., save percentage, and helped the gophers win their first conference title (tied with Michigan). Frank Chiarelli
Frank Chiarelli is a retired Canadian ice hockey player. He captained Rensselaer to its first National Title in 1954 and was the all-time NCAA leader in career goals at the time of his graduation. Career Like many Canadian players of the era Chiarelli began his college career in 1951 as an over-aged freshman. He played for Rensselaer despite the NCAA having a policy restricting all players to 3 years of varsity play and had an immediate impact for the Engineers. In just 18 games Chiarelli scored 55 goals, breaking the NCAA single-season record and became the first freshman to lead the NCAA in both goals and points. Rensselaer's hockey program improved immensely in his first season, going from 5–10 the year before to 15–3, however the team only managed to finish second in the Tri-State League and missed out on the NCAA tournament.
