1949 British Columbia General Election
The 1949 British Columbia general election was the 22nd general election in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on April 16, 1949, and held on June 15, 1949. The new legislature met for the first time on February 14, 1950. The centre-right coalition formed by the Liberal and Conservative parties in order to defeat the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in the 1945 election increased its share of the vote and its majority in the legislature. Three different social credit groupings nominated or endorsed candidates in the election: the Social Credit Party, the Social Credit League, and the Union of Electors. The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is the deliberative assembly of the Parliament of British Columbia, in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Tom Uphill
Thomas Hubert Uphill (June 26, 1874 – February 17, 1962) was a socialist politician in British Columbia, longtime mayor of the town of Fernie and also represented the riding named for the town in the British Columbia Legislative Assembly for forty years, most of them as the legislature's sole labour MLA. Ernest Edward Winch (March 22, 1879 – January 11, 1957) was a British Columbia politician, trade unionist and socialist. Burnaby was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia that first appeared on the hustings in the 1924 election. Demographics Political geography The riding was identical with the Municipality of Burnaby, other than areas near to New Westminster which were included in the New Westminster electoral district. At the time of the riding's creation much of Burnaby was still semi-rural and development was confined to the Kingsway corridor (then "Westminster Highway"), along Hastings Street and Broadway (near Lougheed Highway), and along the two mainlines of the British Columbia Electric Railway via Central Park and Burnaby Lake. Chilliwack (electoral District)
Chilliwack has been a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia since 1916. Incorporating slightly different boundaries, it was the successor riding to the Chilliwhack riding the name of which was based on the older spelling of the name. Political geography and history Chilliwack was the successor riding to Westminster-Chilliwhack, which was one of four subdivisions of the old rural Westminster riding, the others being the ridings that became, after similar name-changes, Delta, Dewdney and Richmond, which are the parent ridings of all current Fraser Valley electoral districts. Chilliwack riding lasted until the 1996 election. In 2001 the area became represented by Chilliwack-Kent and Chilliwack-Sumas. Leslie Harvey Eyres
Leslie Harvey Eyres (August 3, 1892 – February 26, 1983) was a tire merchant and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Chilliwack in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1937 to 1952 as a Conservative. He was born in MacGregor, Manitoba, the son of Charles Eyres and Emily Turner, and was educated in MacGregor and Brandon. In 1922, Eyres married Adelia Sanford. He served three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Eyres was an alderman for Chilliwack City Council for 13 years. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Railways, Trade, Industry and Fisheries. Eyres was defeated when he ran for reelection to the provincial assembly in 1952. Frank Arthur Calder
Frank Arthur Calder, (August 3, 1915 – November 4, 2006) was a Nisga'a politician in Canada. Born in Nass Harbour, British Columbia, Calder was the first indigenous person to graduate from the Anglican Theological College of the University of British Columbia. Mr. Calder was an hereditary chief of the House of Wisinxbiltkw from the Killerwhale Tribe. He died November 4, 2006 at an assisted-living home in Victoria from the effects of cancer and recent abdominal surgery. Political career In the 1949 British Columbia election, Calder was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was elected in the riding of Atlin where he continued to serve until 1979. The New Democratic Party of British Columbia (BC NDP) is a social-democratic provincial political party in British Columbia, Canada. As of 2017, it governs the province. It is the British Columbia provincial arm of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). The party previously governed from 1972 to 1975 and from 1991 to 2001. Atlin (electoral District)
Atlin was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It made its first appearance on the hustings in the 10th provincial general election in 1903 and last appeared in the 34th provincial general election in 1986, after which it was merged with the Skeena riding and was succeeded by Bulkley Valley-Stikine. Demographics Political geography Always one of the province's largest ridings by area, it was always among the smallest in population, and is often cited as an example of a lack of proper representation-by-population in the BC political system. Cariboo (provincial Electoral District)
Cariboo was one of the twelve original electoral districts created when British Columbia became a Canadian province in 1871. Roughly corresponding to the old colonial electoral administrative district of the same name, it was a three-member riding until the 1894 election, when it was reduced through reapportionment and became a two-member riding until the 1916 election, after which it has been a single-member riding. The Socialist Labor Party was a political party in Canada that was formed in 1898 by Canadian supporters of the ideas of American socialist Daniel De Leon and the Socialist Labor Party of America. It became a national party in the 1930s and had its headquarters in Toronto. The party never won any seats.
