The 1940 United States Senate election in Wyoming took place on November 5, 1940. Democratic Senator Joseph C. O'Mahoney ran for re-election to a second full term. He faced Republican Milward Simpson, a member of the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees and a former State Representative, in the general election. Though the presidential election in Wyoming was relatively close, O'Mahoney outperformed President Franklin D. Roosevelt's narrow win, and defeated Simpson in a landslide to win his second term. Milward Simpson
Milward Lee Simpson (November 12, 1897June 11, 1993) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Senator and as the 23rd Governor of Wyoming, the first born in the state. In 1985, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Life and career Simpson was born in Jackson, Teton County, Wyoming, the son of Margaret Louise Burnett (''maiden''; 1874–1974) and W.L. "Billy" Simpson (''né'' William Lee Simpson; 1868–1940). He attended public schools in Meeteetse and Cody. He graduated from Cody High School in 1916. In June 1917, at age , Simpson graduated from the Tome School for Boys in Port Deposit, Maryland. The 1940 United States presidential election in Wyoming took place on November 5, 1940, as part of the 1940 United States presidential election. State voters chose three representatives, or electors, to the Electoral College, who voted for president and vice president. Wyoming was won by incumbent Democratic President Franklin D. Weston County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 6,838. Its county seat is Newcastle. Its east boundary line abuts the west line of the state of South Dakota. History Weston County was created by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory on March 12, 1890, of land partitioned from Crook County. Weston County was named for John Weston, a geologist and surveyor. In 1887, Jefferson Weston and Frank Mondell found rich coal deposits north of Newcastle which caused a railroad to be built through the area. 1940 United States Senate Elections
The 1940 United States Senate elections coincided with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt to his third term as president. Although Roosevelt was re-elected, support for his administration had dropped somewhat after eight years, and the Republican opposition gained three seats from the Democrats. However, the New Deal Democrats regained firm control of both the House and Senate because Progressives dominated the election. The Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party also disappeared from the Senate, as Henrik Shipstead joined the Republican party and Ernest Lundeen had died during the preceding term. Senator Harry S. Truman of Missouri was elected to his final term in the Senate in 1940. Truman resigned in 1945 to serve as President Roosevelt's third Vice President.
