The 1924 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1924 which coincided with the election to a full term of President Calvin Coolidge, who had replaced Warren Harding following his death. Coolidge's popularity helped his Republican Party to gain a net 22 seats from the opposition Democratic Party, cementing their majority. The burgeoning economy and Republican pro-business policies caused the party to gain popularity. An internal split somewhat reduced House gains, as a progressive faction of the party continued to antagonize party leadership. In the early stages of the election, there were fears that the Republicans would be swamped at the polls due to several scandals in the administration of President Warren Harding. George Huddleston
George Huddleston (November 11, 1869 – February 29, 1960) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama, father of George Huddleston, Jr. Life and career Huddleston was born on a farm near Lebanon, Tennessee, the son of Nancy Emeline (Sherrill) and Joseph Franklin Huddleston. Huddleston attended the common schools. He studied law at Cumberland School of Law at Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee. He was admitted to the bar in 1891 and practiced in Birmingham, Alabama, until 1911, when he retired from practice. During the Spanish–American War, Huddleston served as a private in the First Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Infantry. Lamar Jeffers (April 16, 1888 – June 1, 1983) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama. Born in Anniston, Alabama, Jeffers attended public schools and Alabama Presbyterian College at Anniston. He served with the Alabama National Guard from 1904 to 1914. He served as clerk of the circuit court of Calhoun County, taking office in January 1917. Jeffers resigned that office in May 1917 and entered the U.S. Army, serving with the Eighty-second Division in France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by the United States Government.
