The following are the Pulitzer Prizes for 1918. Journalism awards *Public Service: **''The New York Times'', for its public service in publishing in full so many official reports, documents and speeches by European statesmen relating to the progress and conduct of World War I. * Reporting: ** Harold A. Littledale of the ''New York Evening Post'', for a series of articles exposing abuses in and leading to the reform of the New Jersey State prison. * Editorial Writing: **''Louisville Courier Journal'', for the editorial article, " Vae Victis!" and the editorial, " War Has Its Compensation". (No author was named, but the editorials were written by Henry Watterson.) * Newspaper History Award: ** Minna Lewinson and Henry Beetle Hough, students at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, for A History of the Services Rendered to the Public by the American Press During the Year 1917'. Pulitzer Prize
The Pulitzer Prize () is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition within the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher, and is administered by Columbia University. Prizes are awarded annually in twenty-one categories. In twenty of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$15,000 cash award (raised from $10,000 in 2017). The winner in the public service category is awarded a gold medal. Entry and prize consideration The Pulitzer Prize does not automatically consider all applicable works in the media, but only those that have specifically been entered. (There is a $75 entry fee, for each desired entry category.) Entries must fit in at least one of the specific prize categories, and cannot simply gain entrance for being literary or musical. ''His Family'' is a novel by Ernest Poole published in 1917 about the life of a New York widower and his three daughters in the 1910s. It received the first Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1918. Plot introduction ''His Family'' tells the story of a middle-class family in New York City in the 1910s. The family's patriarch, widower Roger Gale, struggles to deal with the way his daughters and grandchildren respond to the changing society. Each of his daughters responds in a distinctively different way to the circumstances of their lives, forcing Roger into attempting to calm the increasingly challenging family disputes that erupt.
