1901–02 In English Football
The 1901–02 season was the 31st season of competitive football in England. League changes Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City replaced Walsall and New Brighton Tower in the Football League. Burton United were formed by a merger of Burton Swifts with former League side Burton Wanderers. Bristol City were the first non-London Southern side in the league. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was the top division of the Football League in England from 1888 until the end of the 1991–92 season, when its teams broke away to form the Premier League. From 1992 to 2004, the name First Division was given to what had previously been called the Second Division. After the 2003–04 season, the division was renamed the Football League Championship (now EFL Championship, with the division below it called EFL League One). The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. John Henry Davies
John Henry Davies (c. 1864 – 24 October 1927) was a wealthy British brewery owner who in 1902 took over the football club Manchester United, which was then called Newton Heath. The club was struggling with a debt of £2,670 at the time. Davies was born in Tutbury, Staffordshire, the fifth of nine children of David Davies, a Welsh engineer from Mold, Flintshire, and Susannah Nield Davies, from Bunbury, Cheshire. He grew up in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. He did not come from a wealthy family and initially worked as an estate agent and innkeeper.Barnes et al. (2001), p. 22. He first moved into the brewing business in the late 1890s as a director of John Henry Lees brewery in Moss Side (formed in 1897).
