1985–86 Memphis State Tigers Men's Basketball Team
The 1985–86 Memphis State Tigers men's basketball team represented Memphis State University as a member of the Metro Conference during the 1985–86 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Memphis State opened the season with 20 consecutive wins and peaked at No. 2 in the AP poll on January 27, 1986. The team went on to finish second in the conference regular season standings and lost in the championship game of the conference tournament (eventual National champion Louisville won both titles). After reaching the Sweet 16 each of the previous four seasons including a Final Four appearance the year prior, the Tigers fell in the second round of the 1986 NCAA Tournament and finished with a 28–6 record (9–3 Metro). Dana Kirk (basketball)
Dana Grey Kirk (July 23, 1935 – February 15, 2010) was an American college basketball coach. He was the head coach for the University of Memphis, Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) men's team from 1979 to 1986. His coaching record was 158–58, including a Final Four appearance in 1985. He had previously been the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1976 to 1979 with a record of 57–23 and the Tampa Spartans, University of Tampa from 1966 to 1971, with a record of 68–59, (.535). Following his stint at Tampa, he was an assistant coach for Denny Crum at the University of Louisville. Memphis State Kirk built the Tigers into a national powerhouse with teams built around Memphis-area players. The 1985–86 Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team represented Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from Blacksburg, Virginia as members of the Metro Conference during the 1985–86 season. The Hokies were led by head coach Charles Moir and played their home games at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. After finishing third in the Metro regular season standings, Virginia Tech was knocked off in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Hokies still secured an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. As No. 7 seed in the Southeast region, the team was beaten by No. 10 seed and defending National champion Villanova in the opening round. Reed Green Coliseum is an 8,095-seat multi-purpose arena in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, United States. Affectionately referred to by fans and local sportswriters as "The Yurt", it opened on December 6, 1965, and is home to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) men's basketball team, women's basketball team and women's volleyball team. Heritage Bank Center is an indoor arena in downtown Cincinnati, adjacent to Great American Ball Park. It was completed in September 1975 and named Riverfront Coliseum because of its placement next to Riverfront Stadium.
