1980 Liverpool City Council Election
Elections to Liverpool City Council were held on 6 May 1980. Following boundary changes, the entire council was up for election (3 Councillors for each ward). The candidates with the highest number of votes in each ward were elected until 1984, the candidates with the second highest number of votes were elected until 1983 and the candidates with the third highest number of votes were elected until 1982. Liverpool City Council
Liverpool City Council is the governing body for the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. It consists of 90 councillors, three for each of the city's 30 wards. The council is currently controlled by the Labour Party and is led by Mayor Joanne Anderson. It is a constituent council of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Eddie Loyden
Edward Loyden (3 May 1923 – 27 April 2003), known as Eddie Loyden, was a British Labour politician. Loyden was Member of Parliament (MP) for Liverpool Garston from February 1974 until he lost the seat to the Conservatives in May 1979. However, favourable boundary changes allowed him to be re-elected in 1983, and he remained MP for Liverpool Garston until he retired in 1997. Early years He was born in 1923 into a large, working-class family living in Portland Street off Vauxhall Road, Liverpool. His father Patrick was a van driver for Tate and Lyle. On leaving school, Eddie worked for a cobblers in the Scotland Road area, but from a young age he wanted to be a seafarer and he would often cycle to the docks to try to get work. At the age of fifteen he got employment as a deck boy on a coaster, leaving his bike at the docks. His mother knew nothing of this until she received a telegram from his new employer. Derek Hatton
Derek Anthony Hatton (born 17 January 1948) is a British former politician, later a broadcaster, property developer and businessman. He gained national prominence as deputy leader of Liverpool City Council in the 1980s and was a member of the Trotskyist Militant group. Early life Hatton attended the Liverpool Institute for Boys from 1959 to 1964. Notable names at the school included Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Peter Sissons, Bill Kenwright and Steven Norris. His subsequent academic success was limited, but he enjoyed sports and appeared on stage as Gratiano in a school production of ''The Merchant of Venice'' with future theatre producer Bill Kenwright. Kensington is an inner city area of Liverpool, England, immediately to the east of the city centre, bordered by Everton to the north, Fairfield to the east and Edge Hill to the south. Grassendale
Grassendale is a suburb of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is in the south of the city, bordered by Aigburth, Garston and Mossley Hill. History The hamlet of Grassendale was acquired by Robert de Blackburn, the lord of the manor of Garston, from Richard de Toxteth in the 14th century. John Hamilton (Liverpool)
John Hamilton (2 September 1922 – 14 December 2006) was a British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party and Leader of Liverpool City Council from 1983 to 1986. Municipal life Hamilton was a lifelong bachelor and worked as a schoolteacher. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, known as the Quakers, also serving as a magistrate. First elected to the council in 1958, Hamilton became Leader of the Labour Group in 1974 replacing Bill Sefton. He led the council from 1976 to 1978, although with no majority he was often overturned by the Liberal and Conservative groups acting together.
