1954 VFL Season
The 1954 VFL season was the 58th season of the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 17 April until 25 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Footscray Football Club for the first time, after it defeated by 51 points in the 1954 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1954, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Jack Collins (footballer, Born 1930)
John Charles "Jack" Collins (3 January 1930 – 6 July 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His father, Jim Collins, who had been the captain-coach of the Yarraville Football Club from 1918 to 1919, played 30 senior games for from 1919 to 1921. Collins was recruited to Footscray in 1950 from the Yarraville Football Club, and, for the next two years, he won the club's best-and-fairest award (later designated the Charles Sutton Medal). In 1953, Collins fronted the VFL Tribunal twice. In June, he was cleared of a striking charge against captain Ron Clegg, but later in the season he was involved in an incident with 's Frank Tuck. Both players were reported following a fierce fight and were subsequently suspended. Victoria Park, Melbourne
Victoria Park is a sports venue in Abbotsford, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The stadium is oval shaped and was built to host Australian rules football and cricket matches. In the past Victoria Park featured a cycling track, tennis courts, and a baseball club that once played curtain raisers to football matches. Victoria Park is historically notable as a former Australian Football League (known as the Victorian Football League until 1989) venue between 1892 and 1999 and headquarters of the Collingwood Football Club for 107 years until 2004. It was also a temporary home ground for the Fitzroy Football Club for the 1985 and 1986 seasons. The ground is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is of state heritage significance. Kenneth Ian Albiston (11 November 1926 – 20 June 2018) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond and Melbourne in the VFL. Jock Spencer
Thomas 'Jock' Spencer (15 December 1928 – 15 April 2003) was an Australian rules footballer who played for North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League. He was named at full-forward in North Melbourne's official 'Team of the Century'. Spencer started his league career in 1948 and the following season topped North Melbourne's goalkicking for the first of seven times with 65 goals. A consistent performer up forward, Spencer topped the club's goalkicking every season to 1956 with the exception of 1953 when he only managed to play four games. He had his most prolific year in front of goal in 1950 when he kicked 86 goals and finished runner up behind John Coleman in the league's goalkicking charts. In round 16 against South Melbourne he kicked a career best 11 goals, the first double figure bag of goals in a game by a North Melbourne player. Mick Grambeau
Mick Grambeau (1 January 1930 – 21 May 2013) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Grambeau played for Sandringham Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and was selected to represent the VFA at the 1950 Brisbane Carnival. In 1955, following North Melbourne's round 11 loss to a weak St Kilda side by seven points, Grambeau and Laurie Icke were dismissed from the club. The pair were notified of the committee's decision by mail, with no reason given. The two players received support from their teammates, who held a club meeting on the Sunday where they unanimously agreed that the action of the committee was unconstitutional. Allen Aylett
Allen James Aylett OBE (24 April 1934 – 16 September 2022) was an Australian rules football player and administrator, best known for his administrator career for which he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2006. As chairman of the then Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1977 to 1984 he oversaw the competition's first expansion outside Victoria into the Sydney market with the establishment of the Sydney Swans, ultimately paving the way for it to become a national competition.
