1909 German Football Championship
The 1909 German football championship, the seventh edition of the competition, was won by Phönix Karlsruhe, defeating BFC Viktoria 1889, Viktoria 89 Berlin 4–2 in the final. For Phönix Karlsruhe it was the club's only appearance in the German championship final. Phönix would later merge with VfB Mühlburg to form Karlsruher SC, with the latter making a losing appearance in the 1956 final. Viktoria 89 Berlin, the defending champions, played its third consecutive final in 1909, having lost in 1907 and won it in 1908. Viktoria would go on to make one more final appearance, winning the competition for a second time in 1911. Viktoria's Willy Worpitzky was the top scorer of the 1909 championship with seven goals. The Viktoria, formerly spelled ''Victoria'', is a German association football trophy which was awarded to the List of German football champions, German champions from 1903 German football championship, 1903 to 1944 German football championship, 1944. SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin was a German football club based in the Berlin district of Neukölln. History The club was founded as ''Rixdorfer TuFC Tasmania 1900'' on 2 June 1900. It is believed the founders of the club were about to migrate to Australia at the end of the 19th century, so they named their club after their shared desired destination Tasmania. In 1965, Berlin's only Bundesliga side, Hertha BSC, had its license revoked and was relegated for breaking the league's player salary rules. The German Football Association wanted to keep a club in the city of Berlin for political reasons and this led to one of the strangest episodes in the Bundesliga's history. Karl Wegele
Karl Wegele (27 September 1887 – 11 November 1960) was a German amateur football (soccer) player who competed in the 1912 Summer Olympics. Career The forward won the German football championship in 1909 with Phönix Karlsruhe. Gottfried Hinze
Gottfried Hinze (2 November 1873 – 23 August 1953) was a German businessman, athlete, and football administrator. He was President of the German Football Association (, DFB) from 1905 to 1925. Hinze joined the sports club Duisburger TV. He was a gymnast and played rounders. In 1892 in the club established a football department, which traveled to England in 1896 and played four games against amateur clubs. In 1900, the football department went independent, founding the Duisburg SpV. Hinze played until 1908 for the Duisburg SpV as goalkeeper. Additionally, he was also active as referee and on 30 May 1909, refereed the final of the German Cup between Phoenix Karlsruhe and the BFC Viktoria 1889. The Southern German football championship () was the highest association football competition in the southern Germany, established in 1898. The competition was disbanded in 1933 with the rise of the Nazis to power. While no senior Southern German championship exists nowadays, the under 15 juniors still play an annual competition for the title, often involving the junior teams of clubs who had once been involved in the senior edition. The Northern German football championship (German: ''Norddeutsche Fußballmeisterschaft''), operated by the Northern German Football Association (German: ''Norddeutscher Fußball-Verband (NFV)'', was the highest association football competition in Northern Germany, in the Prussian provinces of Schleswig-Holstein and Hanover and the German states of Hamburg, Lübeck, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Oldenburg, Bremen and the Duchy of Brunswick.
