Johann Jacob Kaup
Johann Jakob von Kaup (10 April 1803 – 4 July 1873) was a German naturalist. A proponent of natural philosophy, he believed in an innate mathematical order in nature and he attempted biological classifications based on the Quinarian system. Kaup is also known for having coined popular prehistoric taxa like ''Pterosauria'', ''Machairodus'', ''Deinotherium'', '' Dorcatherium'', and '' Chalicotherium''. Biography He was born at Darmstadt. After studying at Göttingen and Heidelberg he spent two years at Leiden, where his attention was specially devoted to the amphibians and fishes. He then returned to Darmstadt as an assistant in the grand ducal museum, of which in 1840 he became inspector. Macrodontophion
''Macrodontophion'' (meaning "long-toothed snake") is the name given to a dubious genus of lophotrochozoan from the Early Devonian Dniester Series of Podolia, Ukraine. It was described by Adalbert Zborzewsky in 1834, but was never given a species epithet, and is considered a ''nomen dubium'', because it is based only on fragments, such as the holotype, a shell of . The known specimens of ''Macrodontophion'' are presumed lost. Several of the specimens Zborzewski described are listed as being in his private collection, while others were said to be held by his colleagues. Taxonomy ''Macrodontophion'' was originally believed to have been a snake tooth that belonged to an animal similar to ''Ophisaurus'', or the cephalopod '' Beloptera'', by Zborzewsky in 1834. In binomial nomenclature, a ''nomen dubium'' (Latin for "doubtful name", plural ''nomina dubia'') is a scientific name that is of unknown or doubtful application. Zoology In case of a ''nomen dubium,'' it may be impossible to determine whether a specimen belongs to that group or not. Georg Zu Münster
Count Georg Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm zu Münster (; 17 February 1776 – 23 December 1844) was a German paleontologist. Biography Münster was born on 17 February 1776 in Langelage, near Osnabrück. In 1800, he reportedly became a Prussian official in the principalities of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth. He assembled a renowned fossil collection, which was eventually acquired by the Bavarian state and became the foundation of the palaeontological museum in Munich. Münster assisted Georg August Goldfuss in writing his great work, ''Petrefacta Germaniae''. Muschelkalk
The Muschelkalk (German for "shell-bearing limestone"; ) is a sequence of sedimentary rock, sedimentary rock strata (a lithostratigraphy, lithostratigraphic unit) in the geology of central and western Europe. It has a Middle Triassic (240 to 230 million years) age and forms the middle part of the three-part Germanic Trias (that gives the Triassic its name) lying above the older Buntsandstein and below the younger Keuper. Nothosauridae are an extinct family (biology), family of carnivore, carnivorous aquatic sauropterygian reptiles from the Triassic time period of China, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, and northern Africa. Osnabrück (district)
Osnabrück () is a district (''Landkreis'') in the southwest of Lower Saxony, Germany. With 2,122 km2 it is the second largest district of Lower Saxony. History The district in its present form was established on July 1, 1972 by merging the former districts of Melle, Bersenbrück and Wittlage, and most of the old district of Osnabrück. Eight municipalities (Atter, Pye, Hellern, Nahne, Voxtrup, Darum, Gretesch and Lüstringen) were merged with the city of Osnabrück in the same year.
