Moon, also spelled Mun, is a Korean family name, a single-syllable Korean given name, and an element in some two-syllable Korean given names. Its meaning varies depending on the Hanja used to write it. Family name As a family name, Moon is written with one hanja, meaning "writing" (; 글월 문 ''geulwol mun''). The 2000 South Korean census found a total of 426,927 people and 132,881 households with this family name. The ''mun'' (, , ) was introduced as the main currency of Korea in 1625 and stayed in use until 1892. Prior to the ''mun'', cash coins with the inscriptions ''tongbo'' (通寶) and ''jungbo'' (重寶) and silver vases called ''ŭnbyŏng'' were used as currency in the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392), as well as imported Ancient Chinese coinage, Chinese currency. The ''mun'' resembled and was derived from the Chinese cash (currency unit), Chinese ''wén'' (cognate also to the Japanese mon (currency), Japanese mon, Ryukyuan mon, and the Vietnamese cash, Vietnamese văn). Coins denominated in mun were cast in copper-alloys such as brass or bronze and were round with square holes. From the 17th century until the end of the 19th century, coins denominated in ''mun'' bearing the inscription ''Sangpyeong Tongbo'' (, ), introduced in 1633, were the most widely circulated currency. The 2019 Pacific typhoon season was a devastating season that became the costliest on record, just ahead of the previous year and 2023, mainly due to the catastrophic damage wrought by typhoons Lekima, Faxai, and Hagibis. The season was the fifth and final consecutive to have above average tropical cyclone activity that produced a total of 29 named storms, 17 typhoons, and 5 super typhoons. The season ran throughout 2019, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and November. The season's first named storm, Pabuk, reached tropical storm status on January 1, becoming the earliest-forming tropical storm of the western Pacific Ocean on record, breaking the previous record that was held by Typhoon Alice in 1979. Mun (religion)
Mun or Munism (also called Bongthingism) is the traditional polytheistic, animist, shamanistic and syncretic religion of the Lepcha people. It predates the 7th century Lepcha conversion to Lamaistic Buddhism, and since that time, the Lepcha have practiced it together with Buddhism. Since the arrival of Christian missionaries in the nineteenth century, Mun traditions have been followed alongside that religion as well. The traditional religion permits incorporation of Buddha and Jesus Christ as deities, depending on household beliefs. Background The exonym "Mun" derives from the traditional belief in spirits called ''mun'' or ''mung''. Together with ''bongthing'' (also ''bungthing'' or ''bóngthíng''), ''mun'' comprise a central element in the religion.
