Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club
The club was founded in 1903 and the movement has since spread to other parts of New South Wales and the rest of the country. The club rests on indigenous land and whilst there is no clear evidence for the name or names of the Eora people who lived in what is now the Waverley area, most sources agree on the Cadigal, but some sources name the Biddigal and Birrabirragal bands as well. History of the club After swimming became more acceptable amongst society in the very late 1800s, the rate of drownings increased significantly at Bronte beach and other beaches across NSW. As such, it became obvious that there was a need for some system to protect people who had ventured into the surf. Surf Lifesaving New Zealand
Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the national association representing 74 Surf Life Saving Clubs in New Zealand. The organisation's motto is 'In it for Life'. This refers to both the long relationship many members have with the organisation, as well as to the organisation's purpose of preventing drowning and injury, thereby saving lives. Specific New Zealand beaches are patrolled by qualified Surf Lifeguards from mid October until April each year. Red and Yellow flags indicate that a beach is patrolled by Surf Lifeguards. The area of water in between these flags is designated as the safest place to swim on the beach, as well as showing where Surf Lifeguards are patrolling. Kiama () is a coastal town 120 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra. One of the main tourist attractions is the Kiama Blowhole. Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club
The Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1906 and operates at Tamarama Beach, Sydney. The clubhouse sits at the northern end of the beach. The club was formed after a dispute between local beach-goers and the operator of an amusement park, Wonderland City, on the beachfront. The operator erected a fence to prohibit access to the amusement park from the beach, but the fence had the effect of obstructing public access to the beach. The surfers and swimmers prevailed when the New South Wales government declared the beach to be public land, and some of them subsequently formed the surf life saving club. Tamarama Beach has a reputation for danger, due to its strong rip currents. Surf Life Saving New South Wales regards it as the state's most dangerous patrolled beach. Coogee Surf Life Saving Club
The Coogee Surf Life Saving Club is a foundation member of the surf lifesaving movement in Australia. It was founded in 1907 by a group of concerned locals and has a proud history of no lives being lost whilst its members have patrolled. Coogee SLSC celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2007, the Year of the Lifesaver. Coogee SLSC has a history, which includes many firsts in the lifesaving movement. These include the first night surf carnival, the first mass rescue, the first shark attack and the development of the resuscitation technique. The Coogee SLSC clubhouse sits at the southern end of Coogee beach. The club's activities are managed and run by volunteers, with the assistance of a variety of community concerned sponsors, including Sydney City Renault. The Manly Life Saving Club is one of Australia's oldest Surf Life Saving Clubs, founded in 1911; located in the Sydney suburb of , in the Northern Beaches Council in New South Wales. History The club was founded in 1911 to patrol Manly Beach after a law banning daylight swimming was overturned. In 1912 Captain Arthur Holmes, known as "Skipper" was appointed president of the Manly Life-Saving Club, a position which he held with conspicuous ability for 26 years. During his long term the club rose under his able administration, built up into one of the finest surfing organisations in the State.
